Room and board were not free, and so Dickens dropped out of school and worked at a boot-blacking warehouse ten hours a day, all before he turned thirteen. That left Charles to board with a number of elderly, impoverished friends of the family. Two years later, John was sent to debtors' prison where he was accompanied by Elizabeth and some of their younger children, as was customary in the Victorian Era. However, in 1822, the Dickens family moved from a quiet suburb in Kent to the center of London where John endeavored to work off the massive debt he had accrued over the previous years. Until the age of ten, Dickens led an idyllic childhood, playing outside and devouring books in equal measure. Born in 1812 in Portsmouth, England, Dickens was the second child of Navy clerk John Dickens and his wife, Elizabeth Dickens. In addition to relating the author's life-story, Ackroyd contextualizes Dickens's legacy, placing great emphasis on Dickens's use of poetic language in novels and the much-loved dramatic readings of his own work. Having previously published biographies of English authors, such as Oscar Wilde, Ackroyd pulls from virtually all the research publicly available to create a comprehensive retelling of the life of the popular and enduring nineteenth-century novelist Charles Dickens, whose most beloved works include Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, and A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens (1990) is a biography by English author Peter Ackroyd.

But the major stop involves something mentioned at the beginning of the book where the boys girlfriends rope them into a community service project for school. I am not going to tell you for what you have to read the book to find that out. Not a straight drive to grams and back but a stop off- or two or three. So the the book is about Jeremy, Hector and Pierce, best friends and bandmates, as they head out on a road trip to return his grandmother's pilates machine to her. The author made it an easy read, and made it read like a teenager wrote it. So many funny things happen I do not even know where to start! These teens are some smart cookies and that is what makes the book so funny. It is about three friends that go on a road trip. But, this was the funniest thing I have read in a long time.Ĭlearly for teenagers - but if you do not enjoy it I suggest you get your funny bone checked. Okay you may think I am nuts giving four stars to this book, when I have given award winning authors four stars. Etymologically it is ultimately derived from Sanskrit चन्दनं Chandana ( čandana), meaning "wood for burning incense" and related to candrah, "shining, glowing" and the Latin candere, to shine or glow. The nomenclature and the taxonomy of the genus are derived from this species' historical and widespread use. Consequently, some species of these slow-growing trees have suffered over-harvesting in the past. Both the wood and the oil produce a distinctive fragrance that has been highly valued for centuries. Sandalwood is often cited as one of the most expensive woods in the world. Sandalwood oil is extracted from the woods for use. The woods are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and, unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance for decades. Sandalwood is a class of woods from trees in the genus Santalum. Besides, many of the joys and sorrows of childhood have lost their poignancy and many incidents of vital importance in my early education have been forgotten in the excitement of great discoveries. The woman paints the child's experiences in her own fantasy. When I try to classify my earliest impressions, I find that fact and fancy look alike across the years that link the past with the present. The task of writing an autobiography is a difficult one.
